The
history of Cal Aquatics is rich in tradition and success. From
1902, when UC Berkeley met the Neptune Club in water polo, to
when Natalie Coughlin won 5 medals in the 2004 Summer Olympics,
Cal swimmers, divers, and water polo players have created a superb
record of achievement, including:
- 15 team national championships
- 59 individual NCAA titles
- 12 NCAA relay titles
- 753 All-Americans
- 91 Olympians
- 58 Olympic medals
- More than 60 Olympic, World, and American records

These successes in the pool have been amply matched by those
in the classroom and in later life. Strong academic performance
has been an essential part of the tradition of Cal Aquatics. In
2004-05, for example, the student-athletes in the aquatics programs
had an average GPA of 3.0, with a total of 31 swimmers, divers,
or water polo players qualifying for either their MPSF or Pac-10
All Academic Teams.
Through their participation in Cal Aquatics, approximately 14,000
talented student-athletes have gained the knowledge, values, confidence,
and discipline necessary to succeed on their own, both before
and after graduation. In fact, many Cal swimming, diving, and
water polo alumni are among today's leaders in business and the
community. |

Where are they now...?
Periodically, the Friends of Cal Aquatics will check in with
a past member of the Cal Aquatics family to see where their post-Cal
life has taken them. If you know of a former athlete or coach
who is deserving of this honor, please contact us, and we will
take it from there.
